MGM has released a new trailer for Hostel director and shock cinema vet
Eli Roth‘s reimagining of a grindhouse staple, 1974 revenge thriller Death Wish.
Stepping into the role that made
Charles Bronson an icon,
Bruce Willis stars as Dr. Paul Kersey, a surgeon who only sees the aftermath of his city’s violence as it’s rushed into his ER – until his wife (
Elisabeth Shue) and college-age daughter (
Camila Morrone) are viciously attacked in their suburban home. With the police overloaded with crimes, Paul, burning for revenge, hunts for his family’s assailants to deliver justice.
Loosely based on the 1972 novel by
Brian Garfield, the original Death Wish was a significant box office success (Bronson reprised the role four times through 1994’s Death Wish V: The Face of Death), resonating with the public as street crime was on the rise. There was controversy, however: the film embraced the idea of vigilantism, whereas the book denounced it.
The spirit of the remake appears to be in tune with the Bronson film in that regard, and from the look of the trailer, Roth isn’t holding back the sensationalistic violence he’s known for. Roth rose to prominence in 2005 with successful torture film Hostel and its 2007 sequel Hostel: Part II. Journalists have included him in the “Splat Pack” along with other contemporaries like
Rob Zombie and
Alexandre Aja known for making excessively violent, gory genre movies.
It’s a bit of a pity to cast an actress of Shue’s caliber (she was Oscar-nominated for 1995’s Leaving Las Vegas) only to kill her off in the first few minutes. It will be interesting, at least, to see how the public responds to this material in 2018. One bit of evidence in the trailer suggesting we shouldn’t take this too seriously is the (maybe unintentionally) amusing “Unsolved Cases” bulletin board in the police station. It’s unclear if Roth is remaking Death Wish as a socially charged potboiler, pure grindhouse escapism, or something in between.
We’ll know for sure when Death Wish opens March 2. Watch the trailer below.
