Samsung Confirms Galaxy S9 And S9 Plus Reveal Set For MWC 2018

Samsung already told us that the Galaxy S9 family would not be ready in time for a CES 2018 reveal, so speculation pointed to the next potential high-profile electronics show: Mobile World Congress 2018 (MWC 2018). That speculation has now been validated, with Samsung mobile chief DJ Koh confirming that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will make their first appearance next month in Barcelona, Spain.

The February unveil is a month earlier than the fireworks for last year's Galaxy S8 family, which were announced at a separate Samsung Unpacked event in New York City. Given the February reveal at MWC 2018, we fully expect to see the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ on store shelves in March.

When it comes to the hardware behind the Galaxy S9, much of it is already known to us at this point. We know that the smartphones will be powered by one of two processors: Samsung's own Exynos 9810 or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. Both are built using second-generation Samsung 10nm process technology, and both are octa-core chips with four high-performance cores coupled with four efficiency cores. The Exynos 9810 will find a home in international market Galaxy S9 smartphones, while the Snapdragon 845 will be features in phones destined for the U.S. market.

Exynos 9810

It is said that the Galaxy S9 will feature a single rear camera, while the Galaxy S9 will features a dual camera arrangement. Both smartphones will retain their rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, but this time around it has been relocated to beneath the camera(s).

Samsung's press materials relating to the Exynos 9810 also suggest that the Galaxy S9 family will feature 3D facial scanning with depth-sensing capabilities, similar in concept to what's available on the current iPhone X flagship though Face ID.
