Motherwell V Aberdeen Preview: Derek McInnes Wants Reaction After Two Defeats

Aberdeen have lost all of their three encounters against Rangers this campaign

  • Derek McInnes said it would be an embarrassment if Rangers don't finish second

  • Steven Gerrard takes over as the new Rangers manager at the end of the season

  • McInnes was a candidate for the Rangers position before Gerrard's appointment

  • Derek McInnes has cranked up the heat on Rangers ahead of Tuesday night's Best of the Rest eliminator at Pittodrie by claiming it would be an 'embarrassment' for the Ibrox side to finish any lower than Premiership runners-up.

Aberdeen have lost all three encounters with the Light Blues this season but know a home win on Tuesday night against a Jimmy Nicholl-led Rangers would kill them off as contenders for second spot.

McInnes, whose team are looking to finish runners-up for the fourth season in a row, declared: 'It would be more than a bit of an embarrassment for Rangers if they don't finish second, with what they have to play with.

'A lot of these players have been there for a while and going on to their fourth manager in 18 months.

'It's not just down to the managers, they have a lot of good players there. I think, with what Rangers have and how they recruited in the January window, they should be second.'

Newly-promoted Hibs are still in the hunt for second, depending on their result at Tynecastle on Tuesday night.

'It says a lot for us and for Hibs that we're still there and battling for second place,' said McInnes. 'Neil Lennon said it will feel like winning the league to Hibs - and it's no different for us.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard will take over as Rangers manager at the end of the season

'It would be a huge disappointment to have gone this close and not finish second now. This is a totally new squad we put together last summer so, if we can finish second, it would be a good achievement.

'The will is there, we are motivated to do it and the intention is to show we're good enough tomorrow night.'

Admitting his team hadn't shown their best in three losses to Rangers, McInnes added: 'In the Rangers games this season, I think their middle to front players have performed better than ours.

'We have to make sure we are better individually this time - and lay a glove on them.

'There are a lot of good players on both teams so hopefully we can come up with the decisive moments to win the game. We will enjoy our summer better if we can win this game.'
