James Corden Defends Peter Rabbit After Criticism

James Corden’s father has hit out at a film critic after they labelled the actor’s Peter Rabbit performance ‘appallingly irritating.’

Yikes!

There’s nothing worse than seeing the fruit of your loin get some backlash – and that’s exactly what Malcolm Corden discovered after reading a review from Mark Kermode.

Well, there may worst things – but Corden’s father was so pissed off that he penned a letter addressing his son’s performance.

The Late Late Night host voices the protagonist Peter in the new live-action film in the character’s first big-screen depiction since he was brought to life in the books of Beatrix Potter.

It is the first time the Potter estate has given permission for a film, but some critics have said the author, who died in 1943, would not have been happy with the results.

But Kermode’s Radio 5 Live co-presenter Simon Mayo read out a letter said to have been penned by James’ dad.

‘To hear you describe our son as “appallingly irritating” was very difficult to listen to,’ Mayo quoted from the letter.

Kermode pointed out that his words referred to Corden’s performance in the movie.

He continued: ‘One sincerely hopes that you never have to hear someone else describe your children as such, especially live on air and especially as it seemed James was the only one drawn out for any criticism.’

Malcolm also challenged Kermode’s review of the recent film The Greatest Showman, saying that he and his wife enjoyed the film despite the critic’s description of it as ‘very poor.’

The proud father goes on to add: ‘I have to commend you guys for your excellent broadcasting skills over many years. Funny, engaging, informative and usually barring when you review our son and Hugh Jackman, a most uplifting way to spend a Friday afternoon. Thank you both.’

Kermode seemed pretty unfazed by the letter as he said: ‘I believe my parents have heard me called much worse things than appallingly irritating.’

Listen to Kermode’s review below:

Peter Rabbit is a beloved creation of children’s author Beatrix Potter and James voices the titular rabbit, who is slightly less innocent than the Peter depicted in the books.

For example, there’s a scene in this film in which the rabbit twerks….

The film also stars Domhnall Gleeson as the main (human) antagonist Tom McGregor, as well as the A-list female voices of Margot Robbie, Sia, Daisy Ridley, Elizabeth Debicki and Rose Byrne.
