Time to SplitI’d love to see a new TimeSplitters game. I still play a couple of TimeSplitters: Future Perfect Arcade/Challenge levels three or four times a week as they’re ideal for a free half-hour’s gaming. I’ve always thought TimeSplitters: Future Perfect surpassed Timesplitters 2. Better story mode and because they did away with the extra ‘wrist’ articulation most weapons have in TimeSplitters 2.That one, unnecessary, feature could make many shooting tasks highly frustrating. Consequently gamers used to the now almost universal modern first person shooter controls are likely to say TimeSplitters 2 hasn’t aged well. What they mean is that is that they’re not used the mechanics of the shooting being a source of difficulty.Future Perfect is no cake walk but it easier in general and more suited to the casual gamer. But all three TimeSplitters games still remain hugely entertaining.By the way, what is with calling TimeSplitters 2 a PlayStation 2 game? The original TimeSplitters was, I believe, a PlayStation 2 exclusive but whilst there is virtually nothing to distinguish them apart graphically PlayStation 2 and Future Perfect were both cross-platform games.
GC:You’re quite right, we were thinking of the first one. If we recall Free Radical considered the GameCube version to be the lead format for TimeSplitters 2.
The future by stealthI have to say PlayStation Plus has been extremely generous over the last few months. I’ve actually built up an enormous backlog of free games because of it. And they’re not exactly shovelware titles either, with many of Sony’s popular first party titles available. It got me thinking though; do you think Sony are testing the waters for future endeavours? That is to say, a strictly subscription-based service that allows the customer to download and play as many games as they like, provided they have paid the initial fees?I have no doubt this model will carry over into the next generation with even greater emphasis, but after that, maybe PlayStation Plus will be the only way people will be able to play games on their PlayStation? It’s quite a scary thought actually, if only because as it stands now I’m certainly getting more than my money’s worth, and I’m not the most ardent supporter of a download-only future.
GC:Well, they did buy cloud-based gaming service Gaikai…
Outside the forumIs there anywhere where you can get a reliable review of PS Vita FIFA 13? All the fan posts on forums seem to be very scathing, basically saying it is nothing more than last year’s game with updated names/club roster – literally. If the case I will buy the first Vita FIFA game, as I enjoyed the demo, for a lot less but just wanted to check if there is a reasonable counter view out there to consider before buying (you know what forum posts can be like). I do know they have not bothered with any link-up features with PlayStation 3 which is very disappointing.

Mostly deadI’ve been playing Dead Or Alive 5 with my daughter since its release and we have noticed some strange goings on in gameplay. Characters can hit other characters even when the move does not connect visually. There can be quite some distance in gameplay terms when this occurs too. Also, when characters are jumping over low attacks the attack still connects sometimes making the jumping characters legs magically going into a standing pose just so the low attack connects. My daughter and I saved replays of our tag games against computer opponents to verify this. We have quite a few instances of these things occurring as they happen with some frequency. I have just spent some time checking the net at DOA Central and 8WAYRUN forums to see if anyone else has noticed this but have not found anything yet. I feel this is a serious issue for the game as it would render it unplayable at tournament level and online. It’s also quite frustrating offline too. Do you know if something will be done about this? Is there any confirmation from Koei Tecmo regarding problems with Dead Or Alive 5? I know companies usually fix issues with downloadable patches but it seems to me this issue is too big for a patch.
GC:There have been some issues with online latency, with a patch promised – but we’ve not heard of it happening when offline. There was a day one patch already, did you get that?
You write like a cowRE: Joseph Dowland. Orson Scott Card’s contribution to Monkey Island consisted of writing the insults in the sword/insults duel. Given that he went on to espouse reactionary neo-conservative politics, the experience of mudslinging and firing off ever-more childish taunts has probably served him well in debates. On book suggestions for GC readers, I highly recommend that fans of DayZ (and disappointed Resident Evil 6 players) in need of another apocalyptic fix check out Alden Bell’s The Reapers Are the Angels, a superbly written novel which marries the Southern Gothic tradition of William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor to zombies (which is just about the best idea anyone has ever had.)

XCOM redeemed, Resi ruinedMany thanks to Spartas Edge for his link to live gameplay of XCOM: Enemy Unknown by the development team at Firaxis Games. I enjoyed the gameplay so much I pre-ordered the game on Amazon.I support the disappointment felt by many gamers that the Resident Evil franchise has been hijacked in name only, and that it’s true name should be something like, Zombie Circus Shooter.

Less than second bestHow the mighty have fallen. I knew Resident Evil 6 was going to be one of the worst Resident Evils when I saw the first trailer, and the demo only compounded those fears. As I have previously mentioned Resident Evil 4 is my second favourite game of all time, so to witness the series go from the majesty that was Resident Evil 4 to a monotonous and derivative mess is horrible.I’m sure some staunch fanboys will attack your review and the opinions of those who have negative views on the game. But surely even they now have to accept that Resident Evil is dead. No pun intended. Of course there will be those who genuinely enjoy the game, but I suspect most of the individuals who laud the game will be slightly older fanboys forced into denial due to nostalgia.

End it nowPicked up my pre-ordered copy of Resident Evil 6 today and, although I have only played the prelude and a short section of Leon’s campaign (roughly 45 minutes in total), I am enjoying the game and am perfectly happy with my purchase. I knew you weren’t going to be kind in your review GC but I can understand where you are coming from.Personally I have already said I liked Resident Evil 5 and am a massive Resi fan, I just love the characters and universe. I think the game plays well and the action is thrilling, though it is still clunky and awkward with the controls like you say, but if it wasn’t it would be Resi I suppose. I know I will enjoy the game and the size of the four campaigns plus Mercenaries and multiple difficulties will offer plenty of replayability.Though I do think that Capcom should move on now and make this the last instalment. I would love to see a new IP as a next gen launch title and let the series die with a little dignity still intact. And forget remakes, just let it go. If you want to play the old games get a Wii and get the GameCube remakes and Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, job done.

Inbox also-ransWith the gathering furore over the improvements to the Resident Evil franchise, what real improvements to games do fans hope for? My own would be to be able to play as a Supermutant in Fallout, or as a vault survivor out to get revenge on the most evil corporation in game history, Vault-Tec.
PearlhandlerI have never seen this before, but this is amazing . Lego is so awesome.
You do realise what the inevitable outcome of Resident Evil 6’s critical pasting is going to be, don’t you? Spark Unlimited making Resident Evil 7…

This week’s Hot TopicThe subject for this week’s Inbox was suggested by reader rico di franco (gamertag), who asks what is your favourite video game story? What is it about the story that makes it your favourite? Is it the characters? The themes addressed by the plot? Or simply the overall atmosphere and pacing? What are your favourite story moments and were they conveyed through gameplay or non-interactive cut scenes? How important is a good story to you when playing video games and how well does the quality of gameplay match the story in your favourite choice? What’s your favourite game without any strong story elements and what game do you really enjoy despite the story being awful?
