Do we expect Jamaal Lascelles to leave Newcastle United?

It’s not likely unless it’s an astronomical bid. Lascelles only signed a new contract in October 2017 taking him upto June 2023, and he is settled in the North East.

What has Jamaal Lascelles said about his future?

Speaking back in May, Lascelles told Chronicle Live: “This is the happiest I’ve been.

“I’m playing week in, week out. And I’m the captain here, the fans love me, and I’ve got a good relationship with them because I love them. And we’re doing well, too.

“I’m very happy here. You hear things, you hear rumours and stuff, but I’m a young player and I need to be playing football at a good club - and that’s what this is.

“Overall it’s been an unreal season as far as I’m concerned, both for me personally, and more importantly for the club.

“This is the right club for me at the right time.

“We have a huge fanbase, an amazing manager, and this club is massive. It has so much history.

“As captain, I want to see how far we can go - and potentially take it back to where it belongs.”

So what would it take for Lascelles to leave?

As noted, an astronomical bid but should Rafa Benitez be let down in the transfer market this summer that may turn his head. Lascelles has been vocal in pleading with Mike Ashley to back Benitez this summer.

What has Rafa Benitez said about Lascelles future?

Rafa Benitez is confident that he can keep his captain on Tyneside.

“I think he will stay here, and hopefully for the long term. He has huge potential and big clubs will look at him because he is a young, English centre-back.

“It is not easy to find good centre-backs who can play well in the Premier League, especially not English ones, and it’s even harder to find young ones. You only need to look around the Premier League to see that.

“He has all the attributes to be a target for all top teams because you can see from his performances over the last two years he keeps getting better and better.

“But I think that for his future, and for his development, that he stays in a place where he can play and he can improve and continue to keep getting better with us.

“I think he understands that too. He seems happy and he is learning all the time, so I hope he stays for a long time.”

Chris Waugh on Jamaal Lascelles’ future

“I am confident Jamaal Lascelles will be at Newcastle United come the start of the 2018/19 season - despite overtures from Everton. It would take a very substantial bid for the Magpies to even contemplate selling their captain, and even then Rafa Benitez wants to build a side around his current captain.

“However, one note of caution: as long as Benitez’s long-term future remains unresolved, the greater the chance of Lascelles being tempted away. If Benitez is not tied down long term, then Lascelles may wonder if his own future is not better served elsewhere. At the moment he certainly sees a bright future for Newcastle - but that is inextricably linked with Benitez staying.”

Mark Douglas on Jamaal Lascelles’ future

“You get vibes about certain players leaving and they aren’t around Jamaal Lascelles - despite the reports linking him with a move to Everton. The player doesn’t seem to be agitating for it, his manager certainly isn’t trying to make it happen and the sort of numbers being quoted in reports are way short of those that would make Newcastle sit up and take notice.

“You never say never with Newcastle United and high-profile sales, but it doesn’t feel as if there’s much momentum behind this at the moment.”
