If you’ve anticipated the launch of the Galaxy S9 at CES 2018, then you’ll be disappointed as the company is planning to unveil its first flagship smartphone of Mobile World Congress in February.
The news comes straight from the company’s president of mobile, DJ Koh which also confirmed the news to ZDNet that a launch date will be confirmed at the event. This puts to rest those rumors about a possible CES launch, which were a bit too presumptuous in my opinion.
The company also confirmed its foldable phone ambitions for 2018.
We’ve also heard rumors about Microsoft and their long-running quest for launching foldable smartphone as well, so it will be interesting to see the results of their patents and R&D efforts.
Samsung has a reputation for pushing the boundaries of technology, so I’d fully expect them to push a mid-range folding smartphone of some sorts this year. All one has to do, is to look back at their track record with Galaxy Round, Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy Mega etc, and it’s easy to come to a conclusion, the tech giant is gearing up for a new smartphone redesign in the future. It’s a great way to test the market before launching an entirely new product line.
We pretty much have a general idea of what to expect from the S9 and S9 Plus.
Improved LTE support, Snapdragon 845 processor/Exynos, Dual camera setup, Super AMOLED curved display, and a fingerprint sensor below the camera, instead of beside it.
As an S8 Plus owner, having to unlock my device with the fingerprint scanner still remains cumbersome even after all this time.
The fact Samsung is placing the unlocking mechanism underneath the S9 is a great move, but one that should have been done in the current generation devices.
Still, both phones are more than likely to be minor updates from the already wildly successful S8 and S8 Plus which are still widely regarded as one of the best smartphones you can buy in 2018.
Samsung may have a few tricks up their sleeve with the upcoming Galaxy flagship smartphones, so while rumors can give you a glimpse of things to come, we won’t know anything for sure until MWC 2018.
