The current OnePlus 5T is a very good value, but the company has suffered some setbacks, such as its flagship not being able to play Netflix in HD, as well as some security issues. The OnePlus 6 could be the phone that makes up for some of these missteps while putting serious pressure on the competition.
For now, there's not a ton of info out there on the OnePlus 6, but some rumors have started to crop up. Here's what to expect.
OnePlus 6 Release Date: When We Might Get It
So, when might the OnePlus 6 actually hit store shelves? In a conversation with CNET in January, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said that his company would begin talks with carriers in the coming months. He also said at the time that the OnePlus 6 would be available sometime in the late second quarter, which could put its launch date at around June.
A Big Screen
The Chinese site Weibo published leaked images of what the publisher said was the OnePlus 6. Chief among the findings was a big screen that, like the iPhone X and Galaxy S9, nearly covers the handset's face. That means we should expect thin bezels all around, and for OnePlus to ditch any sign of a physical home button.
A follow-up report from Android Central said that the smartphone's screen would come with a 19:9 aspect ratio. That might cause some problems if you want to watch content in 16:9, however, and it's unclear how OnePlus might address that. In other handsets that have wider aspect ratios, you'll often lose some of the picture to have the video or photo stretch across the display.
Yes, a Notch
Also featured in the Chinese site Weibo, it appears that OnePlus will take cues from Apple and others and bundle a notch in the smartphone's screen. However, unlike Apple's iPhone X, which makes the notch noticeable by allowing software to wrap around it, the screen on the OnePlus 6 appears to come with a black strip to try to hide the feature. As with other handsets, look for the notch to house the earpiece and front-facing camera.
A Familiar Processor Choice
In the report from Android Central, a source confirmed that OnePlus is planning to bundle the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 in the OnePlus 6. The site obtained benchmarks leaked on AnTuTu that confirm the handset is codenamed A6000. And if the benchmarks are any indication, the OnePlus 6 should offer some solid performance for most uses.
Bring On the Dual Cameras
Credit: Tom's GuideWe don't have any information on the specs that might be offered in the rear camera on the OnePlus 6. However, leaked images on the site Weibo and reported on at BGR suggest that the smartphone will come with vertically aligned dual rear cameras. We should get some specs on the cameras in the coming weeks.
A Fingerprint Sensor
Also in the BGR report from Weibo, the images reveal OnePlus' plan for a rear-facing fingerprint sensor. Like what you'd find on the Galaxy S9, the fingerprint sensor sits below the rear-facing cameras. There also appears to be an LED flash that sits above the fingerprint sensor and below the cameras.
The OnePlus 5T proved that OnePlus could make a great flagship-caliber phone that offers top-notch performance, camera quality and long battery life for hundreds less than the competition. But that competition is getting more fierce all the time. Nevertheless, if OnePlus can deliver a OnePlus 6 with Snapdragon 845 power, a great screen and perhaps improved facial recognition, the company could have a very good shot at earning the title (once again) of best unlocked phone value.
