Faulty sensors may have provided pilots the wrong speed data which caused a plane to crash in Russia over the weekend, investigators said Tuesday.© AP The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry, an emergency team works at the scene of a AN-148 plane crash in Stepanovskoye village, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Domodedovo airport, Russia on Tuesday.
The Sunday crash happened after the An-148 pilots noticed different speed indicators, Russia’s Interstate Aviation Committee said.
The wrong speed readings stemmed from a heating unit on the plane that wasn’t turned on before take-off, according to the committee.
The plane’s captain reportedly didn’t want to defrost the aircraft before flying.
The Saratov Airlines plane crashed minutes after taking off from Moscow's Domodedovo airport, killing 71 people — including six crew members.
The captain had over 5,000 hours of flying, including 2,800 with an An-148.
The committee said it was still looking for clues with the plane’s data recorder.
