Boris Johnson Slams Sadiq Khan As ‘pompous Popinjay’ Over Cancelled Trump Visit

Boris Johnson denounced London Mayor Sadiq Khan as a “puffed-up pompous popinjay” as Donald Trump’s decision not to visit Britain next month sparked a bitter political row.

“We will not allow US-UK relations to be endangered by some puffed up pompous popinjay in City Hall.”

Mr Khan hailed the President’s announcement that he had cancelled plans to open the new American embassy building as proof he had “got the message” that he is “not welcome here”.

As Downing Street attempted to play down the significance of the President’s move , Mr Johnson intervened with a pointed personal attack on Mr Khan – his successor as Mayor – and the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. He accused them of undermining transatlantic relations with their vocal criticism of the President.

The Foreign Secretary tweeted: “The US is the biggest single investor in the UK – yet Khan & Corbyn seem determined to put this crucial relationship at risk.

“We will not allow US-UK relations to be endangered by some puffed up pompous popinjay in City Hall.”

UK-US ‘strong and deep partnership’

Downing Street was initially unable to say whether Mr Johnson was speaking for the Government, but later clarified that he was. It insisted that the “strong and deep” partnership between Britain and the US would endure.

Within days of Mr Trump’s arrival in the White House last January, Theresa May flew to Washington and invited him to pay an official state visit to the UK.

“It appears that President Trump got the message from the many Londoners who love and admire America and Americans but find his policies and actions the polar opposite of our city’s values of inclusion, diversity and tolerance.”

The move was widely condemned amid predictions that Mr Trump would encounter massive public protests. The government says the invitation still stands, but cannot put a date on when it might take place.

The President had been scheduled to make a lower-profile visit next month to open the new embassy, which is being relocated to Mayfair in central London to Vauxhall, south London.

Trump blames Obama

In a late-night tweet, Mr Trump said he had scrapped his plans, denouncing his predecessor, Barack Obama, over the embassy’s relocation.

He said: “Reason I cancelled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for ‘peanuts,’ only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars.

“Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!”

Mr Khan reacted to the announcement: “It appears that President Trump got the message from the many Londoners who love and admire America and Americans but find his policies and actions the polar opposite of our city’s values of inclusion, diversity and tolerance.”

The Mayor clashed with the President after Mr Trump attacked his handling of last year’s London Bridge terror attack.
